Cosmic Cathedral is a collaborative project featuring Neal Morse, Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy, and Byron House. Their debut album, Deep Water, was developed from extended studio jam sessions, with producer Jerry Guidroz selecting and shaping the strongest material into cohesive compositions. The resulting record leans toward a groove‑oriented sound while retaining elements associated with Morse’s progressive‑rock style, including extended arrangements, melodic development and occasional jazz‑influenced passages. A central feature of the album is a 38‑minute multi‑section suite. Although no tour is planned for 2025, the group is scheduled to perform at Morsefest in October of that year. The project originated from Morse’s desire to create an album that differed from his typical output. To achieve this, he assembled a group of musicians with long‑established careers and international reputations. The sessions emphasized spontaneity, with the musicians developing ideas collectively in real time. Much of the material emerged directly from these improvisations, which were later refined into complete tracks. According to the band, several vocal lines and lyrical ideas were formed during the sessions themselves, reflecting the organic nature of the process. Deep Water blends progressive‑rock structures with rhythmic and groove‑based foundations. The album incorporates elements of rock, jazz, and atmospheric improvisation, shaped by the diverse backgrounds of the participating musicians. The combination of Morse’s compositional approach, Thompson’s rhythmic sensibilities, Keaggy’s guitar work, and House’s bass contributions results in a sound that is both exploratory and cohesive.
