Transatlantic were a multinational progressive rock supergroup consisting of Neal Morse (ex–Spock’s Beard), Roine Stolt (Kaipa, The Flower Kings), Pete Trewavas (Marillion, Edison’s Children) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater). They formed in 1999 as a side project alongside their full‑time bands, but disbanded in 2002. They reunited in 2009 and disbanded again in 2022. Although not an official member and appearing on only one studio album, Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation) frequently joined the band during live performances. Due to illness, Ted Leonard stood in for him during the 2014 tour, and Leonard also joined the band during the 2022 tour. The band originally intended to include Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos, but when he was unable to participate, Morse and Portnoy invited Flower Kings guitarist/vocalist Roine Stolt instead. The lineup was completed with bassist Pete Trewavas, a veteran of Marillion and Edison’s Children. Before settling on the name Transatlantic, the group briefly considered the moniker “Second Nature”. Their first album, SMPT:e (2000), whose title is both an acronym of the members’ surnames and a reference to a studio time‑code protocol, received strong critical acclaim. AllMusic’s Robert Taylor described it as containing “some of the best progressive rock music ever written.”.
