Mdou Moctar

Mahamadou Souleymane (born 1984), known professionally as Mdou Moctar, is a Nigerien guitarist, singer and songwriter whose modern rock sound is rooted in Tuareg guitar traditions. His music first spread widely through mobile‑phone and memory‑card trading networks in West Africa. He performs primarily in the Tamasheq language. Moctar’s fourth album, Ilana: The Creator (2019), was his first to feature a full band. His guitar playing draws on the takamba and assouf styles. He also appeared in the 2015 film Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai (Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It). Mdou Moctar was born in Abalak, Niger, and grew up in the village of Tchintabaraden before moving to the mining town of Arlit. Inspired by musicians such as Abdallah Oumbadougou, he wanted to learn guitar, but his family disapproved of electric music for religious reasons. As a result, he built his first guitar himself, using bicycle cables as strings. He is a practicing Muslim and observes Ramadan. Moctar’s first album, Anar, was recorded in Sokoto, Nigeria, in 2008. It featured autotuned vocals and influences from Hausa music. Although not officially released at the time, the songs spread widely across the Sahel through informal mobile‑phone music‑sharing networks. Many of his early tracks circulated as MP3 files shared person‑to‑person via Bluetooth, often without his direct involvement.
