Ulrich Schnauss & Thorsten Quaeschning

Synthwaves is a collaborative electronic music project by German composers Thorsten Quaeschning and Ulrich Schnauss, both long‑time members and protégés of the late Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream. The album draws on the traditions of the Berlin School of electronic music, combining sequencer‑driven patterns, analog timbres and expansive atmospheric textures. Recorded during an intensive two‑week session in Berlin, the project was created using an array of vintage synthesizers, analog sequencers and classic drum machines. Quaeschning and Schnauss approached the sessions with a balance of technical precision and playful experimentation, resulting in a collection of compositions that merge structured rhythmic development with expressive melodic layers. The album consists of eight instrumental pieces, each built around interlocking patterns that evolve gradually through modulation and subtle variation. While the music pays homage to early pioneers of electronic and kosmische musik, it maintains a contemporary sensibility through its clarity of production and emotional warmth. Synthwaves is often noted for its cinematic qualities, evoking imagery through sound: shimmering arpeggios reminiscent of neon‑lit cityscapes, weightless pads suggesting open landscapes, and slowly building polyrhythms that create a sense of forward motion. The album reflects the duo’s shared background in Tangerine Dream while demonstrating their individual strengths as composers and sound designers. The project highlights Quaeschning and Schnauss as accomplished figures within modern electronic music, extending the legacy of the Berlin School into a new era with a refined and immersive sonic palette.
