Focus is a Dutch progressive rock band formed in Amsterdam in 1969 by keyboardist, vocalist and flautist Thijs van Leer, drummer Hans Cleuver, bassist Martijn Dresden, and guitarist Jan Akkerman. Over the decades the band has gone through many different line‑ups; since December 2016 the group has consisted of Van Leer, drummer Pierre van der Linden, guitarist Menno Gootjes, and bassist Udo Pannekeet. In the United States, their releases have sold more than one million RIAA‑certified albums. After Akkerman joined Van Leer’s rock trio in late 1969, the musicians adopted the name Focus and initially worked on a Dutch production of the rock musical Hair. Their debut album, Focus Plays Focus (1970), attracted little attention, but the follow‑up Moving Waves (1971) — featuring the hit single “Hocus Pocus” — brought the band international fame. Success continued with Focus 3 (1972) and Hamburger Concerto (1974); the former included their second major hit, “Sylvia”. In the mid‑1970s the band recorded two more albums with a rotating cast of musicians, including guitarist Philip Catherine, singer P.J. Proby, and drummers Colin Allen, David Kemper, and Steve Smith. Focus eventually disbanded in 1978, but reunited briefly in 1990 and again in 1997.
