Iluvatar

Iluvatar is an American progressive rock band formed in Baltimore in 1992. The group’s name is derived from a fictional deity in The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. The founding lineup consisted of vocalist Glenn McLaughlin, drummer Gary Chambers, bassist Dean Morekas, guitarist Dennis Mullin and keyboardist Jim Rezek. The band’s musical approach draws on the traditions of 1970s progressive rock, with influences from groups such as Genesis, Marillion, Styx and Pink Floyd. Their work is characterized by extended song structures, mixed‑meter writing and the incorporation of elements from jazz and classical music. Iluvatar released their self‑titled debut album in 1993 through Kinesis Records, becoming one of the label’s most successful early releases. Their second album, Children, appeared in 1995 and helped establish the band as part of the 1990s progressive‑rock resurgence. Following the release of Children, the group underwent several lineup changes on drums, with Rick Fleischmann and Allen Brunelle both contributing to the 1997 release Sideshow. Brunelle also toured internationally with the band during this period. Drummer Chris Mack joined the group in December 1997. Iluvatar’s most recent studio album, A Story Two Days Wide, was released by Kinesis Records in 1999.
