Pelican is an American post‑metal band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2001. Known for their heavy, atmospheric and almost entirely instrumental approach, the band has released six studio albums and six EPs. Pelican’s music is built on dense layers of melody, long-form compositions and a blend of influences that place them somewhere between stoner rock, doom metal and post‑rock. Three of the members — Larry Herweg, Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder‑Lebec — have also played together in the experimental band Tusk. The band initially worked with Hydra Head Records, later joining the Southern Lord Records roster in 2009. To support their first Southern Lord release, the EP Ephemeral (June 6, 2009), Pelican toured with Wolves in the Throne Room. Their next full‑length album, What We All Come to Need, arrived on October 27, 2009, featuring guest appearances from Greg Anderson and Aaron Turner. To celebrate the album’s release, Chicago’s Kuma’s Corner even created a special one‑night‑only “Pelican Burger.”
