Liquid Smoke was a psychedelic, progressive and hard‑rock band from New York, USA, formed in 1968 and active until 1971. The group consisted of Sandy Pantaleo (lead vocals), Vince Fersak (guitar), Ben Ninnman (keyboards), Mike Archuleta (bass) and Chas Kimbrell (drums). The members of Liquid Smoke first played together while studying at East Carolina University (ECU). By 1969, the band had attracted label interest and signed with Avco Embassy Records. Their self‑titled debut album was released in January 1970, produced by Vinny Testa—known for his work with Frijid Pink—and engineered by John Bradley at Ultra‑Sonic Recording Studios in Hempstead, New York. The album featured a blend of late‑1960s psychedelic rock, heavy guitar work and organ‑driven arrangements typical of the era’s underground rock scene. Liquid Smoke released one studio album and several singles. Their cover of “I (Who Have Nothing)”, originally associated with Ben E. King, became their most successful recording. The single reached No. 83 on the Billboard charts and achieved regional No. 1 status in several U.S. markets. Another standout track from their album, “Lookin’ for Tomorrow”, gained international attention when it was covered by Peruvian band Gerardo Manuel & El Humo on their debut album Apocallypsis. Producer Vinny Testa also worked on the 1968 psychedelic concept album Strange Night Voyage by Merchants of Dream, co‑produced with Shadow Morton, placing Liquid Smoke within a broader network of late‑1960s experimental rock. After the group disbanded in 1971, vocalist Sandy Pantaleo pursued a successful career in acting, singing and composing under the name Sonny Rose (also known as Jack Dominilla).
