Murphy Blend was a German progressive rock group best known for the album First Loss, one of the standout releases on Polydor’s Kuckuck label. The band operated as a four‑piece, featuring Wolf‑Rüdiger Uhlig on organ, harpsichord, piano and vocals, Wolfgang Rumler on guitar and vocals, Andreas Scholz on bass, and Achim Schmidt on drums. The album was recorded at Union Studio in Munich between October and December 1970, produced by Jonas Porst and engineered by Thomas Klemt. The group’s music combined heavy progressive rock with strong classical influences, largely shaped by Uhlig’s keyboard work and his background in classical studies in Berlin. Their material was melodic and driven by prominent organ and guitar lines. First Loss consisted of six main compositions, most of them written by Uhlig, along with a very short interlude titled “Happiness,” notable for its extremely brief duration. Murphy Blend disbanded shortly after completing the album. Bassist Andreas Scholz later joined the heavy progressive band Blackwater Park in 1971, while Wolf‑Rüdiger Uhlig contributed to Frumpy’s third album, By the Way, released in 1972.
