Metropolis was a West Berlin–based band active in the mid‑1970s. The group was formed by musicians who had previously played in other Berlin projects, including Tom Hildebrand (formerly of Mythos) and Manfred Opitz and Michael Westphal (both associated with Zarathustra). After returning from the recording sessions for Seven Up with Ash Ra Tempel and Timothy Leary, Michael Duwe joined the lineup. Guitarist Helmut Binzer, originally from southern Germany, and vocalist Ute Kannenberg — known in German pop circles under the stage name Tanja Berg, notably for the German version of “Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye” — completed the ensemble shortly thereafter. For nearly a year, the band focused on writing and arranging material in their rehearsal space at the former “Wrangel Kaserne,” a converted Prussian barracks in the Kreuzberg district of West Berlin that housed numerous practice rooms for local musicians. During this period, Metropolis developed the compositions that would appear on their first and ultimately only studio album. The group later signed with the German label Ariola (BMG).
