We Lost The Sea

We Lost the Sea are an instrumental post‑rock band from Sydney, Australia, formed in 2007 by friends from several dissolved bands in the outer‑west Sydney suburb of Campbelltown. The current lineup consists of Mark Owen, Matt Harvey, Mathew Kelly, Kieran Elliott, Alasdair Belling and Carl Whitbread. The band’s third studio album, Departure Songs, earned them widespread acclaim within the global post‑rock and post‑metal communities. They have also achieved notable international success for their live performances. We Lost the Sea are signed to the Australian independent label Bird’s Robe Records, distributed through MGM in Australia and independently worldwide. The band was formed when Mark Owen approached Nathaniel D’Ugo about starting a new project after Nathaniel’s previous band, Omeratá, had broken up. They invited friends Chris Torpy (vocals) and twin brothers Grant and Brendon Warner (guitars) from another local band, Sound The Mute, to join. Their goal was to create a heavy, expansive musical project functioning as a collaborative collective. Over time, the lineup changed frequently, at one point expanding to nine members. The band name does not have a specific meaning; the early members wanted something evocative, emotional and open to interpretation. Their albums often explore themes such as loss, grief, hope, space exploration, war and historical narratives.
