Wobbler is a Norwegian progressive rock band formed in 1999. The band was founded near Hønefoss, Norway, in early 1999 with the intention of recreating the musical aesthetics of early 1970s progressive rock, particularly through the use of period‑appropriate instruments and compositional styles from roughly 1969 to 1974. Influences included PFM, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes, Museo Rosenbach, ELP, and similar acts. Within a few months, the basic ideas for their demo and debut album Hinterland were developed. After a pause between 2001 and 2003, a demo was recorded at Lars’ studio and shared online. Wobbler eventually signed with the American label The Laser’s Edge. By this time, Lars Fredrik Frøislie had expanded his collection of vintage keyboards, and recording for Hinterland began in June 2004. The band avoided MIDI entirely and used only pre‑1975 instruments, including Mellotron, Hammond organ, Minimoog, Rhodes piano, clavinet, ARP synthesizers, piano and harpsichord. After eight months of studio work, the album was completed. In July 2005, Hinterland was premiered at NEARfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania—one of their rare live appearances. In February 2009, the band released their second album, Afterglow, through Termo Records. Their third album, Rites at Dawn, followed in May 2011, also on Termo Records. The fourth album, From Silence to Somewhere, was released in 2017 and received widespread acclaim. As of April 2021, it is the highest‑rated album of the entire twenty‑first century on the progressive‑rock database Prog Archives, with an average user rating of 4.35 from more than 700 ratings, and ranks as the site’s 32nd highest‑rated album of all time. It also appeared in the Top 40 Albums of the Year on Rate Your Music, where it was the highest‑ranked progressive‑rock release on the list.
