Labyrinth is an Italian power‑metal and progressive‑metal band formed in 1994 in Massa, Tuscany. The group shifted its musical style and themes after the departure of guitarist Olaf Thorsen in 2002; he later returned to the band in 2009. Labyrinth formed in 1994 with the lineup of Franco Rubulotta (Frank Andiver, drums), Luca Contini (Ken Taylor, keyboards), Andrea Bartoletti (bass), Andrea Cantarelli (Anders Rain, lead guitar), Carlo Andrea Magnani (Olaf Thorsen, lead guitar) and Fabio Tordiglione (Joe Terry, vocals). The band released its first demo, Midnight Resistance, which received enthusiastic reviews in major metal magazines in Italy and Germany. This attention led to a deal with the new independent label Underground Symphony. After the demo’s release, Bartoletti left the band and was replaced by Chris Breeze (Cristiano Bertocchi). Their first EP, Piece of Time, established the band’s direction: fast, melodic metal with strong keyboard arrangements. In 1995, Labyrinth released their debut album No Limits, which significantly increased their visibility among metal fans and independent labels. Interest grew not only in Italy and across Europe, but also overseas. Japanese label Teichiku Records offered to distribute the album, and the band appeared in the top‑ten charts of the metal magazine Burrn! for nearly six months. Shortly after the album’s release, vocalist Joe Terry (Fabio Tordiglione) left the band; he later became the frontman of Rhapsody of Fire.
