Fatoumata Diawara (born 21 February 1982) is a Malian singer‑songwriter and actress who has made her home in France. Her work blends traditional Wassoulou roots with a wide range of global influences, giving her music a contemporary and unmistakably personal sound. Diawara first built her career as an actress, appearing on stage and in several notable films, including Genesis (1999), Sia, The Dream of the Python (2001) and the acclaimed Timbuktu (2014). She later shifted her focus toward music, collaborating with a broad circle of artists and releasing three studio albums, beginning with her 2011 debut Fatou. Diawara was born in the Ivory Coast to Malian parents and spent her early years there. As a teenager she was sent to Bamako, Mali, to live with an aunt. At eighteen she moved to France to pursue acting, returning briefly to Mali for a film project. When her family attempted to pressure her into marriage, she left again for Paris, choosing to continue her artistic path on her own terms.
