Atlantis – The Best off Music

Atlantis was a powerful German rock band formed at the end of 1972, emerging directly from the first breakup of the influential kraut‑prog group Frumpy. Built around the unmistakable, soulful voice of Inga Rumpf and the expressive keyboard work of Jean‑Jacques Kravetz, the band quickly became one of the standout acts of the Hamburg rock scene. Where Frumpy had leaned heavily into complex progressive structures, Atlantis moved toward a more groove‑oriented blend of blues‑rock, funk and soul, while still carrying the musical sophistication associated with their prog roots. Their background in progressive rock — combined with occasional jazz‑fusion touches and symphonic textures — makes them an important entry in the Prog Related / Blues Rock tradition. The early lineup was something of a German “supergroup,” featuring guitarists Frank Diez (Armageddon) and Rainer März (Marz, Jeronimo, Schoenherz), supported by the exceptional drummer Curt Cress, one of the most recorded and respected percussionists in European progressive music (Snowball, Passport, Orange Peel, Triumvirat, Saga, Lucifer’s Friend, Panarama). Across five studio albums, Atlantis evolved from heavy, blues‑driven rock toward a more accessible soul‑rock sound. The band ultimately disbanded in 1976, but their early work remains highly regarded for its musicianship and distinctive blend of styles.
