Saariselka is an American ambient music duo consisting of composers Marielle Jakobsons and Chuck Johnson. Their work explores the intersection of acoustic resonance, electronic texture and spacious, slowly unfolding musical landscapes. The project draws conceptual inspiration from natural phenomena, particularly the meeting of earth and light, a theme reflected in the duo’s atmospheric and contemplative sound. Jakobsons contributes Fender Rhodes, organ, synthesizers and occasional voice, while Johnson performs on pedal steel guitar and provides additional sound treatments. Together they create a style sometimes described as ambient Americana, blending minimalism, drone‑based harmony and gently shifting melodic patterns. Saariselka’s debut album, The Ground Our Sky (Temporary Residence, 2019), presents a sonic environment shaped by gradual movement and luminous tonal layers. The album’s conceptual framework evokes the idea of looking downward rather than upward to understand the relationship between ground and sky — a metaphor for shifting perspective and finding clarity through inversion. This thematic focus informs the duo’s approach to composition, emphasizing openness, resonance and a sense of suspended time. Jakobsons and Johnson each bring extensive individual experience to the collaboration: Jakobsons previously co‑founded the experimental ensemble Date Palms, while Johnson is known for his work in ambient, folk and pedal‑steel‑based sound design. Saariselka combines these backgrounds into a unified musical language marked by subtlety, spaciousness and emotional depth.
