Peter Tosh

Peter Tosh OM GCOT (born Winston Hubert McIntosh; 19 October 1944 – 11 September 1987) was a Jamaican musician and reggae singer. Along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, he was one of the core members of The Wailers (1963–1976), after which he established himself as a successful solo artist and a prominent promoter of Rastafari. He was murdered in 1987 during a home invasion. Tosh was born Winston Hubert McIntosh on 19 October 1944 in Westmoreland, the westernmost parish of Jamaica. He was abandoned by his parents and “shuffled among relatives.” When he was fifteen, his aunt died and he moved to Trenchtown, Kingston. He was educated in Bluefields until age 17, then moved to Kingston to live with another aunt. He began an apprenticeship as a welder. He first learned guitar after watching a man in the countryside play a song that captivated him. Tosh observed the man play the same tune for half a day, memorising every movement of his fingers. He then picked up the guitar and played the song back perfectly. When asked who had taught him, Tosh replied that he had taught himself. During the early 1960s, as an aspiring musician, Tosh studied with vocal teacher Joe Higgs, who offered free music lessons to young people. Through Higgs, Tosh met Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) and Neville O’Reilly Livingston (Bunny Wailer). He later adopted the name Peter Tosh, and the trio began singing together in 1962. Higgs taught them harmony, and while developing their sound, they often performed on the street corners of Trenchtown.
