Steven Lee Lukather (born October 21, 1957) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer, best known as the sole continuous founding member of the rock band Toto. His reputation as a highly skilled guitarist led to steady session work beginning in the 1970s, establishing him as one of the most prolific session musicians of his era. He has recorded guitar tracks for more than 1,500 albums across a wide range of artists and genres, and has also contributed as a songwriter, arranger and producer. Lukather played guitar on Boz Scaggs’ albums Down Two Then Left (1977) and Middle Man (1980), and was a prominent contributor to Michael Jackson’s Thriller (1982). He has released nine solo albums, the most recent being Bridges, released in June 2023. He has stated that George Harrison inspired him to start playing guitar. Influenced by blues‑rock players such as Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, as well as jazz‑fusion guitarists like Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin, Lukather is known for a playing style often described as “melodic and intense.” He is also recognized for his efficiency in the studio, frequently recording parts in a single take with minimal processing. Although he once used extensive effects both live and in the studio, he now advocates cleaner tones and minimal signal processing. Lukather primarily plays a signature electric guitar manufactured by Ernie Ball Music Man, bearing his nickname “Luke.” He also uses Yamaha and Ovation Adamas acoustic‑electric guitars. Steven Lee Lukather was born on October 21, 1957, in the San Fernando Valley, California. His father worked as an assistant director and production manager at Paramount Studios, contributing to television shows such as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and I Dream of Jeannie.
