Little Feat is an American rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1969 by vocalist‑guitarist Lowell George, bassist Roy Estrada (both formerly of the Mothers of Invention), keyboardist Bill Payne, and drummer Richie Hayward. By late 1972 the group had settled into what is widely considered its classic lineup: George, Payne, Hayward, bassist Kenny Gradney, guitarist‑vocalist Paul Barrere, and percussionist Sam Clayton. Creative tensions eventually led George to dissolve the band shortly before his death in 1979. The remaining members reunited in 1987, and Little Feat has continued to perform in various configurations ever since. Lowell George first met Bill Payne while still a member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. The two musicians decided to form a new band in 1969, bringing in former Mothers bassist Roy Estrada and drummer Richie Hayward, who had previously played with George in The Factory. Hayward had also been part of the Fraternity of Man, best known for their track “Don’t Bogart That Joint” on the Easy Rider soundtrack. The band’s name originated from a joking remark by Mothers drummer Jimmy Carl Black about George’s “little feet,” while the spelling “Feat” was chosen as a playful nod to the Beatles.
