Amos Key was formed in 1970 in Emmering, Bavaria, Germany, and remained active until 1976. The trio consisted of Thomas Molin (keyboards, vocals), Andreas Gross (bass, guitar, vocals) and Lutz Ludwig (drums). Their music blended classical influences with rock and progressive elements, driven primarily by Molin’s keyboard‑focused arrangements. The band released their debut album, First Key, in 1973. As a tribute to their musical inspirations, the record was dedicated to Bach, Beethoven and Schumann. Their sound has often been compared to groups such as Ekseption, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Deep Purple and The Nice, with additional parallels drawn to Atlantic Philharmonic, Marian Varga and Collegium Musicum. Unlike many progressive rock acts of the era, Amos Key preferred concise compositions over extended suites. Around 1975, the trio returned to the studio to begin work on a second album. The project was never completed, though a handful of demo recordings have surfaced over the years. With only one official release and a brief period of activity, the band gradually slipped into obscurity — yet their lone album remains a notable artifact of early German progressive rock.
