Kool And The Gang

Kool & the Gang are an American R&B, soul, and funk band formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964. The original lineup featured brothers Robert “Kool” Bell and Ronald Bell (later known as Khalis Bayyan), along with Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Robert “Spike” Mickens, Charles Smith, George “Funky” Brown, Woodrow “Woody” Sparrow, and Ricky Westfield. Over the decades, the group has gone through many personnel changes and explored a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, disco, rock, and pop. After experimenting with several names, they eventually settled on Kool & the Gang, signed with De‑Lite Records, and released their self‑titled debut album in 1969. Their first major breakthrough came with the release of Wild and Peaceful in 1973, which produced the U.S. Top 10 hits “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging.” Following a brief downturn, the band entered a second wave of commercial success between 1979 and 1986, driven by their collaboration with Brazilian producer Eumir Deodato and the addition of vocalist James “J.T.” Taylor.
