Kenny Wayne Shepherd has long been recognized as one of the key figures bringing American roots music into the modern era. In late 2019 he began shaping the songs that would become Dirt On My Diamonds, working at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. What started as early melodic sketches and rough riffs grew into a collection of songs built on themes of resilience, reflection, and personal truth. For Shepherd, the album captures a meaningful moment in his creative life — a snapshot of where he stands as an artist. Since the release of his breakthrough debut Ledbetter Heights in 1995, Shepherd has continued to push the boundaries of contemporary blues. Rather than relying on traditional formulas, Dirt On My Diamonds leans into fresh textures and unexpected turns, from the modern edge of “Sweet & Low” to the socially aware tone of “Best Of Times.” The album also showcases the strong creative partnership between Shepherd and producer Marshall Altman, a collaboration built on mutual trust and a shared drive to elevate each project.
