Sandy Coast was a Dutch rock band led by Hans Vermeulen (1947–2017) that achieved success in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the Netherlands, their best‑known hits include “Just a Friend” and “True Love (That’s a Wonder).” Hans Vermeulen founded the group in 1961 under the name Sandy Coast Skiffle Group. His brother, bassist Jan Vermeulen (1945–1999), soon joined, and at his suggestion the band changed its name to Sandy Coast Rockers. The name was eventually shortened to Sandy Coast. They performed at community centers and talent competitions, and in 1965 won a recording contract with Negram, releasing their debut single “Being in Love.” Their fourth single, a 1966 cover of Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again” — arranged in the style of The Byrds’ 1965 version — gave them their first chart success. “I See Your Face Again,” from their debut album And Their Name Is…, reached the Dutch Top 20 in the spring of 1968. Around this time, Sandy Coast shifted from beat music to a more psychedelic sound. Early in 1969, “Capital Punishment,” recorded while Vermeulen was suffering from a cold, became another Top 20 hit.
