Gift was a German hard rock band whose origins go back to 1969, when a group of schoolmates formed a project under the name Phallus Dei. The early lineup featured Rainer Baur (guitar), Hermann Lange (drums), Uwe Patzke (bass), Helmut Treichel (vocals) and Nick Woodland (guitar). By 1972, Woodland had departed to join Subject Esq., while the remaining members entered the studio to record their debut album. Their self‑titled record, Gift, appeared in 1973 on the Bellaphon label. The album showcased a heavy rock sound typical of the early 1970s, built around forceful guitar riffs and a raw, energetic approach. A year later, the band released their second album, Blue Apple. By this time, vocalist Helmut Treichel had left the group, and the lineup expanded with Dieter Frei (keyboards, Moog, Mellotron, vocals) and Dieter Atterer (guitars, vocals), adding a broader instrumental palette to their music. Gift’s sound combined hard‑edged rock with occasional progressive touches, driven by powerful guitar work and the added depth of keyboards and Mellotron. Although their career was relatively short, their albums have since become notable examples of early‑1970s German heavy rock.
