Lucy in Blue was formed in 2013 and released its self‑titled debut album on Bandcamp in 2016. The lineup consists of Arnaldur Ingi Jónsson (keyboards, vocals), Kolbeinn Þórsson (drums), Matthías Hlífar Mogensen (bass, vocals), and Steinþór Bjarni Gíslason (guitar, vocals). The band’s name traces back to the early days of the group, when Arnaldur (“Naldo”) and Matthías (“Matti”) had just met and begun playing together. At the time, they were also enrolled in the same physics class, where both struggled with the mathematical material and found their attention drifting toward music. As the term drew to a close, they faced the risk of failing the course unless they succeeded in their final group presentation. Their assigned partner was Lucy, an exchange student from South Africa. After noticing the pair’s musical talent—and their difficulty with the coursework—she offered to write the entire presentation herself on one condition: the two musicians would play for her while she worked. Steinþór (“Steini”) and Kolbeinn (“Kolli”) were eventually convinced to join in, even though it meant performing through the night. The story became part of the band’s early identity and ultimately inspired the name Lucy in Blue.
