Bullfrog

Bullfrog was a Munich‑based rock band formed in 1973, active within the broader krautrock movement. Their music combined melodic hard rock with prominent guitar work and expressive organ passages, drawing comparisons to German art‑rock groups such as Jane. Over the years, the band went through several lineup changes, with one of the later and better‑known formations featuring Harald Kaltenecker (keyboards), Sebastian Leitner (guitar), Vincent Trost (bass), Ali Halmatoglu (drums) and vocalist Gerd Hoch. Hoch’s death in the summer of 1995 marked a tragic moment in the band’s history. Bullfrog released their self‑titled debut album in the mid‑1970s. While the record did not make a major impact, their second album, High in Spirit (1977), featured stronger production and significantly expanded their audience. The album gained attention not only in Germany and the United States but also achieved remarkable success in Portugal, where it climbed above both ABBA and Pink Floyd on the national charts. The group remains a noteworthy entry in the krautrock‑related hard‑rock scene, appreciated by collectors for its melodic approach and characteristic blend of guitar‑driven rock and organ‑based arrangements.
