Moving Sidewalks were a Houston‑based rock band formed in 1966. They released several singles and one album before the group came to an end when bassist Don Summers and keyboardist Tom Moore were drafted into the army. After the band dissolved, vocalist and guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Dan Mitchell went on to form what would become ZZ Top. Gibbons started the group in the mid‑1960s, and they quickly built a strong following within Houston’s active teen music scene. The band recorded multiple singles and one full‑length album, Flash. Their track “99th Floor” became a regional hit, spending six weeks at No. 1 in Houston. This success led to a deal with Wand Records, which released their follow‑up single “Need Me,” another Top 10 local hit. Their rising profile earned them opening slots on major tours, including shows with Jimi Hendrix and the Doors. After Moore and Summers were drafted, Gibbons and Mitchell brought in Lanier Greig and formed the earliest version of ZZ Top, marking the next chapter in Gibbons’ musical career.
