Secret Oyster was a Danish jazz‑rock and progressive rock group formed in 1972. The band emerged as a merger of musicians from several established Danish acts, including Burnin’ Red Ivanhoe, Coronarias Dans and Hurdy Gurdy, giving the new ensemble the character of a supergroup. Secret Oyster remained active until 1977, reunited in 2007, and continued performing into the 2010’s. The group was founded by saxophonist and keyboardist Karsten Vogel, who had been a central figure in Burnin’ Red Ivanhoe. As that band’s career drew to a close, Vogel began assembling a new project, bringing with him drummer Bo Thrige Andersen and long‑time jazz collaborator Morten Vinding on bass. Guitarist Claus Bøhling, already known within the Danish rock scene, soon joined the lineup. The band took its name from “Secret Oyster Service,” a track from Burnin’ Red Ivanhoe’s second album. The final member to enter the group was keyboardist Kenneth Knudsen, who had previously worked in an avant‑garde piano trio and had no prior experience with electric instruments. His arrival proved significant: Knudsen became the band’s second major composer and allowed Vogel greater freedom to focus on wind instruments during performances. Secret Oyster went on to develop a distinctive blend of jazz‑rock, progressive structures and instrumental virtuosity, earning a strong reputation within the Scandinavian fusion scene. Their albums from the 1970s are regarded as key works in Danish progressive music.
