smalltape is the solo project of Berlin‑based multi‑instrumentalist, vocalist, composer and producer Philipp Nespital. With the early albums Circles (2011) and The Ocean (2017), the project quickly grew from an underground discovery into a notable presence within the European art‑rock and progressive‑rock scene. In 2021, the album The Hungry Heart became smalltape’s most successful release to date. It was named Album of the Month by eclipsed magazine and received strong critical reception from publications such as Rock Hard, MINT, Metal Hammer and Good Times. Following the album’s success, Nespital expanded smalltape into a full live act. International concerts and tours followed, including support performances for Bruce Soord of The Pineapple Thief. With a five‑member live band, smalltape has appeared on prominent European stages, including: Night of the Prog Festival (2018, 2022), Prog Power Festival, Additional club and festival dates across Europe. The project is noted for its blend of atmospheric rock, cinematic arrangements and detailed production, all shaped by Nespital’s multi‑instrumental approach and studio craftsmanship.
