Oblivion Sun

Oblivion Sun is an American progressive rock band founded by Frank Wyatt and Stanley Whitaker, both original members of the 1970s group Happy the Man. After Happy the Man reunited in 1999 to headline NEARfest 2000 and later released The Muse Awakens (2004), Wyatt and Whitaker began developing new material that proved difficult to complete within the constraints of the re‑formed band. Their growing collection of compositions led them to launch a separate studio project. This transitional effort, released under the name Pedal Giant Animals, featured guest musicians Chris Mack and Pete Princiotto. The project became the foundation for a new full‑time band: Oblivion Sun. Over time, the lineup evolved, with musicians such as Bill Plummer contributing on keyboards, several bassists including Keith Macsoud and Dave DeMarco, and multiple drummers before Bill Brasso became the permanent percussionist. The bass position eventually settled with David Hughes, who also added vocals. Oblivion Sun blends classic progressive rock with elements of funk, jazz‑rock and melodic vocal writing. While rooted in the intricate arrangements associated with Happy the Man, the band embraces a broader stylistic palette, incorporating groove‑oriented passages and more prominent vocal sections. Their music is characterized by complex instrumental interplay, shifting time signatures and richly layered compositions. Band Members: Stan Whitaker – guitar, vocals, Frank Wyatt – keyboards, reeds, Bill Brasso – drums, David Hughes – bass, vocals. Together, the quartet developed a dynamic sound that appealed to both long‑time progressive rock listeners and newer audiences.
