Jack Rose (February 16, 1971 – December 5, 2009) was an American guitarist from Virginia who later made Philadelphia his home. He became widely respected for his solo acoustic guitar work, though he also played a central role in the experimental drone group Pelt. Rose joined Pelt in 1993, performing alongside Michael Gangloff and Patrick Best. At the time, the trio drew heavily from punk and rock influences, and with occasional contributions from friends such as Mikel Dimmick and Jason Bill (also of Charalambides), they released their first album in 1995. From then on, Rose balanced two musical paths: his emerging solo career and his ongoing work with Pelt. The band went on to release more than a dozen albums and several smaller projects, mostly through VHF Records, Eclipse Records, and their own Klang imprint. They toured extensively across the United States, even nodding to the relentless touring ethic of the Grateful Dead with their album title Rob’s Choice. Over the years, they shared stages with groups such as Harry Pussy, Charalambides and Sonic Youth. Within Pelt, Rose played multiple instruments but was primarily known for his electric guitar work. By the late 1990s, the band began shifting toward more folk‑influenced material, prompting Rose to move increasingly toward the acoustic guitar — a transition that would define his later solo recordings.
