Bjørn Riis is a Norwegian guitarist, composer, multi‑instrumentalist, and producer, recognized as one of the leading figures in contemporary progressive rock. He first gained international attention as a founding member of Airbag, later establishing a parallel solo career that has earned widespread acclaim. Riis began exploring music in the early 1980s, initially inspired by hard‑rock and heavy‑metal acts such as Kiss, Black Sabbath, and Whitesnake. His interest soon expanded toward atmospheric guitar work, and the influence of Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree became central to the development of his compositional style. Airbag formed in Oslo in the early 2000s, with Riis emerging as the band’s principal songwriter and lyricist. His expressive guitar playing became a defining element of the group’s sound. Over nearly two decades, Airbag and Riis have performed at major festivals—including Night of the Prog and Cruise to the Edge—and shared stages with prominent progressive‑rock artists such as Marillion, Yes, Saga, Neal Morse, and Riverside. Riis launched his solo career with the 2014 album Lullabies in a Car Crash, a release that marked a significant artistic milestone and broadened his international profile. His solo work explores a wide range of influences, drawing not only from the progressive‑rock tradition but also from late‑1960s singer‑songwriters, Americana, electronic music, and cinematic soundscapes.
