Snarky Puppy is an American jazz‑fusion collective led by bassist and composer Michael League. Founded in 2004, the group blends elements of jazz, rock, world music, funk, and improvisation. Over the years they have earned five Grammy Awards and built a reputation as one of the most innovative large ensembles in contemporary music. Although the band has collaborated with vocalists, League has described Snarky Puppy as “a pop band that improvises a lot, without vocals.” Snarky Puppy began in 2004 as a ten‑piece ensemble formed by Michael League in Denton, Texas, shortly after his second year at the University of North Texas. League has often joked that the band started because he wasn’t placed in any of the school’s official ensembles, so he created his own outlet to play and experiment. What began as a student project quickly evolved into an international collective. Today, Snarky Puppy functions as a rotating “superband” of roughly 40 musicians, affectionately known as “The Fam.” Members contribute on guitar, bass, keyboards, horns, strings, drums, and percussion. Despite the large roster, six of the musicians who appeared on the band’s debut album, The Only Constant, remain part of the core lineup. Many past and present members studied at the University of North Texas, contributing to the group’s deep musical cohesion and shared background in jazz and improvisation.
