Elephant’s Memory (also billed as Elephants Memory, without the apostrophe) was an American rock band formed in New York City in the late 1960s, known primarily for backing John Lennon and Yoko Ono from late 1971 to 1973 under the Plastic Ono Band name. Elephant’s Memory was formed between 1967 and 1968 by Stan Bronstein (saxophone, clarinet, vocals) and Rick Frank Jr. (drums). In 1968, the band briefly added Carly Simon as a vocalist. By 1969, the lineup had expanded to include John Ward (bass), Danny Adler (guitar, keyboards), Chester Ayers (guitar), Myron Yules (bass trombone), R. Sussmann (keyboards), Michal Shapiro (vocals), Guy Peritore (guitar, vocals), David Cohen (guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Michael Rose (guitar). Two of their songs, “Jungle Gym at the Zoo” and “Old Man Willow,” appeared on the 1969 soundtrack to the film Midnight Cowboy. The band received a gold disc for their contribution. In 1970, they had a minor hit with “Mongoose” on Metromedia Records, reaching number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 (October 17, 1970), number 5 on Chicago’s WCFL (November 23, 1970), and number 1 on Pittsburgh’s KQV. In Canada, the single reached number 71 (September 26, 1970). In 1971, they released “Skyscraper Commando,” which Record World praised for its strong lyrics and instrumental track. Between 1970 and 1973, the lineup stabilized around Bronstein and Frank, joined by guitarist Wayne “Tex” Gabriel, keyboardist Adam Ippolito, and bassist Gary Van Scyoc. Known in the Greenwich Village scene as a politically active street band, Elephant’s Memory backed John Lennon and Yoko Ono during the recording of Some Time in New York City in March 1972. The album was released in June 1972 in the United States and in September 1972 in the UK.
