Sir Lord Baltimore

Sir Lord Baltimore was an American rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1968 and widely regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of heavy metal. The classic lineup featured John Garner as both lead vocalist and drummer, Louis Dambra on guitar, and Gary Justin on bass — a configuration notable for its rare use of a singing drummer in hard rock and metal. Their 1971 debut album Kingdom Come drew significant attention, including a Creem magazine review that contained what is often cited as the first documented use of the term “heavy metal” to describe a musical style. AllMusic later referred to Sir Lord Baltimore as “arguably America’s first bona fide heavy metal band.” After years of inactivity, Garner and Dambra reunited in 2006 and revived the name Sir Lord Baltimore for a new release, Sir Lord Baltimore III Raw. This later incarnation introduced an explicit Christian lyrical focus, marking a clear shift from the themes of their early work. Justin, who was no longer active as a musician, did not take part in the reunion. The band came to a definitive end when John Garner passed away on December 5, 2015, due to liver failure.
