Carbon Based Lifeforms

Carbon Based Lifeforms is a Swedish electronic music duo formed in Gothenburg in 1996 by Johannes Hedberg and Daniel Vadestrid (né Ringström, formerly Segerstad). Both musicians are also members of the synthpop band Thermostatic. Hedberg and Ringström (both born in 1976) first met in 1991 at age 15, after Hedberg transferred into Ringström’s class. They became friends and shared interests in music, films and video games. They began collaborating using the Protracker music‑tracker sequencer and later the Amiga computer system. In 1994, they moved to PC‑based production and formed the tracker trio Bassment Studios with Swedish musician and producer Mikael Lindqvist. The following year, they shifted toward MIDI‑based music and created Notch, a project focused on acid, techno and house. Their first track was a remix of “What Would You Think” by the synthpop group Mourning After. Lindqvist soon departed and Notch dissolved, but he encouraged Hedberg and Ringström to continue making music together. Around this time, the pair became increasingly interested in ambient music after Hedberg’s sister introduced them to Solar Quest’s Orgship (1994), which became a major influence. They were also inspired by The Future Sound of London and Boards of Canada, whom Vadestrid later described as “our role models.” After producing early ambient‑leaning tracks under the Notch name, the duo wanted to explore the genre further by incorporating drone and chill‑out elements. This led to the creation of their new identity, Carbon Based Lifeforms, in 1996, initially as a side project. The name was taken from a Notch demo album and reflected their interest in themes combining biology and technology, as well as references to science‑fiction concepts.
