Soilwork

Soilwork is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Helsingborg, known for blending aggressive riffing with strong melodic hooks. Since their formation in late 1995, the band has released twelve studio albums and established themselves as one of the defining acts of the Scandinavian metal scene. Soilwork was originally founded by vocalist Björn “Speed” Strid and guitarist Peter Wichers under the name Inferior Breed. In 1996 they adopted the name Soilwork, meaning “working from the ground up,” reflecting their ambition to build their sound from raw foundations. The band began in 1995 as Inferior Breed, drawing inspiration from groups such as Pantera, Meshuggah, and Carcass. After changing their name to Soilwork in 1996, they shifted toward a more melodic direction while retaining the intensity of their early influences. Their first demo, In Dreams We Fall into the Eternal Lake, was planned shortly after the name change. Before recording began, bassist Carl‑Gustav Döös left the band, leaving guitarist Peter Wichers to handle the bass parts. A chance meeting with Michael Amott (Arch Enemy), who owned a record store in Helsingborg, proved pivotal — Amott heard the demo and helped connect the band with Listenable Records, leading to their first record deal.
