Jud’s gallery

JUD’S GALLERY was a progressive rock band from Offenburg in southwest Germany. The group was founded in 1971 by composer and multi‑instrumentalist Jürgen “Judy” Winter (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar) and Peter Oehler (guitar, piano). Although active throughout the early 1970s, the band never released an official album during their original existence. Like several other underground German acts of the era, they recorded sessions for the SWF radio station in Baden‑Baden. These tapes remained in the archives for decades until they were rediscovered and later issued by the German label Longhair Music, remastered from the original reels. The first lineup also included Hannes Gremminger (violin, piano), Herbert Brandmeyer (drums) and Elly Lapp (vocals). In July 1972, the five musicians entered the SWF studio to record their first original material. The session was completed in a single day without overdubs, capturing a raw blend of heavy blues rock and folk elements, highlighted by Gremminger’s distinctive violin work and extended improvisations. Following these recordings, JUD’S GALLERY toured extensively across Germany, sharing stages with Golden Earring, Steamhammer, Pretty Things, Beggar’s Opera and Alexis Korner. After a festival appearance, the band was invited back to the SWF studios. By this time, the lineup had changed, with Clem Winterhalter (organ) and Sibi Siebert (drums) joining the group. In March 1974, they recorded a new set of tracks that leaned more toward jazz‑rock and psychedelic influences, including the long, atmospheric piece “Nordach.”
