The Pretty Things were an English rock band formed in 1963 in Sidcup, Kent. Named after the Bo Diddley song “Pretty Thing,” they quickly became known for their raw sound and rebellious attitude. During their first era, which lasted until 1971, they released five studio albums, including their self‑titled debut and S. F. Sorrow, a groundbreaking concept album often cited as one of the earliest rock operas. They also issued several EPs and a string of UK singles, with tracks like “Don’t Bring Me Down” and “Honey I Need” reaching the Top 20. The band was founded by vocalist Phil May and guitarist Dick Taylor, who had previously played with the early Rolling Stones. The original lineup also included bassist John Stax, guitarist Brian Pendleton, and drummer Pete Kitley, who was soon replaced by Viv Prince before recording began. Over the years, the group went through many personnel changes, with musicians such as Peter Tolson, Jon Povey, Skip Alan, and Wally Waller contributing during different periods.
