Flower Travellin’ Band

Flower Travellin’ Band (Japanese: フラワー・トラベリン・バンド, Hepburn: Furawā Toraberin Bando) was a Japanese rock band formed in 1967. They were associated with Japan’s counterculture movement and became known for blending early heavy metal with psychedelic and progressive rock. Although they received wide acclaim from critics, they did not achieve commercial success and disbanded in 1973 to pursue individual careers. The band reunited in late 2007 but permanently disbanded after the death of vocalist Joe Yamanaka in 2011. While the band’s releases never sold well, they continue to be highly regarded within the music industry. Their albums have never gone out of print and remain available in new audiophile formats such as SHM-CDs. Former members of Flower Travellin’ Band continue to perform FTB songs live under the name Flower Power, joined by other musicians. The band was initially started as a side project by Yuya Uchida after returning to Japan from a visit to his friend John Lennon in England in the mid-1960s. During that trip, he was introduced to emerging artists such as Cream and Jimi Hendrix. Wanting to bring a similar sound to Japanese audiences, Yuya formed the “Flowers” as a cover band with various group sounds musicians and two vocalists: male singer Hiroshi Chiba and female singer Remi Aso.
