FREN is an instrumental progressive rock group from Kraków, Poland, formed in 2017 by keyboardist Oskar Cenkier, guitarist Michał Chałota, bassist Andrew Shamanov, and drummer Oleksii Fedoriv. The quartet introduced their work with the debut album Where Do You Want Ghosts to Reside?, which established their interest in atmospheric, multi‑layered composition. The band’s music has drawn comparisons to several strands of 1970s progressive rock. Critics have noted the spaciousness reminiscent of Pink Floyd, the eclectic and angular qualities associated with King Crimson, occasional bursts of heaviness that echo Änglagård, and the gentler melodic sensibilities found in Caravan. Despite these reference points, FREN maintains a distinct identity shaped by their own compositional approach. As an instrumental ensemble, FREN emphasizes long‑form structures, dynamic contrasts, and detailed textural development. Their pieces often shift between meditative, trance‑like passages and more forceful, energetic sections, creating a sense of musical “space‑time” unique to the group. Their work balances refinement and melancholy with raw intensity and spontaneity, resulting in a sound world where emotional depth and technical precision coexist.
