Herbert “Bert” Jansch (3 November 1943 – 5 October 2011) was a Scottish folk musician and a founding member of the influential band Pentangle. Born in Glasgow, he rose to prominence in London during the 1960s as an acoustic guitarist and singer‑songwriter. Over the course of his career, he released more than 28 albums and toured extensively from the 1960s into the 21st century. Jansch became a central figure in the British folk revival, performing in folk clubs, recording a series of solo albums, and collaborating with artists such as John Renbourn and Anne Briggs. In 1968 he co‑founded Pentangle, touring and recording with the group until their split in 1972. After a brief break from music, he returned in the late 1970s to work on various collaborative projects. He later joined a re‑formed Pentangle in the early 1980s and remained with the band through several line‑up changes until 1995. Jansch continued performing and recording as a solo artist until his death. His work has had a lasting influence on musicians across genres, including Jimmy Page, Mike Oldfield, Paul Simon, Pete Hawkes, Nick Drake, Donovan, Neil Young and Johnny Marr. Jansch received two Lifetime Achievement Awards at the BBC Folk Awards: one in 2001 for his solo career, and another in 2007 as a member of Pentangle.
