Marconi Union are an English ambient music band formed in Manchester in 2003 by Richard Talbot and Jamie Crossley. In 2011, their live keyboardist Duncan Meadows became a full‑time member. Marconi Union formed in 2003 when Talbot and Crossley met while working in a Manchester record shop. The band developed a reputation for being somewhat elusive, often declining interview requests and showing little interest in self‑promotion, despite receiving considerable critical acclaim. In more recent years, they have participated in several online interviews and appeared in Electronic Sound Magazine. Their self‑produced debut album, Under Wires and Searchlights, was released in 2003 on the independent label Ochre Records. Shortly afterwards, they signed with All Saints Records. In 2005, the band released Distance, which introduced a darker and more electronic sound. Their next album, A Lost Connection, was originally intended for release on All Saints, but delays caused by label restructuring following its acquisition by Warner Bros. led the band to take control of their own output. With two completed albums awaiting release, Talbot and Crossley founded their own digital label, MU Transmissions, and began selling their music directly through their website. Starting in 2008, Marconi Union offered a series of twelve exclusive monthly downloads, consisting of outtakes, unreleased tracks and alternate mixes. These were later compiled into the 2009 release 13. That same year, the band issued a new album, Tokyo, on the German label Binemusic; the record was inspired by imagery of the Japanese capital.
