Karfagen (meaning Carthage) is a Ukrainian symphonic art‑rock project led by composer and multi‑instrumentalist Antony Kalugin. The name was first used in 1997, when Kalugin formed a school‑age band. While studying at an architectural university, he began recording early Karfagen material in local studios; several of these early tracks later appeared on the 2009 compilation Key to Perception. In 2005, Kalugin assembled a group of musicians to record Continium, the first official Karfagen album. Its release led to a contract with Unicorn Digital (Canada) in 2006. The album received positive listener response and was followed by The Space Between Us in early 2007. Later that year, Karfagen began a long‑term association with Caerllysi Music (UK). Karfagen has frequently expanded its sound through collaborations with guest musicians. Notable contributors include Roberto Díaz (Anima Mundi) on Lost Symphony (2011), Tomek Mucha (electric violin) and Sergey Klevenskiy (clarinet, whistles, flutes) on Aleatorica (2013), and Mathieu Spaeter (guitars) and Pascal Gutman (stick‑bass) on Magicians Theatre (2014), with Gutman also appearing on the track “Yuletide.” Musically, Karfagen is primarily instrumental, blending keyboards, guitars, classical instrumentation and ethnic elements. The project’s style is rooted in symphonic art‑rock, incorporating touches of new‑age, folk, jazz‑rock and neo‑progressive rock. Influences include Camel, Focus, Happy the Man, Greenslade, The Flower Kings, UK and Kayak.
