Youssou N’Dour (born 1 October 1959), also known as Youssou Madjiguène Ndour, is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, musician, composer and politician. He is widely recognized for helping shape mbalax, a popular Senegambian musical style rooted in the sacred Serer njuup tradition and ndut initiation ceremonies. From April 2012 to September 2013, he served as Senegal’s Minister of Tourism. In 2004, Rolling Stone described him as “perhaps the most famous singer alive” in Senegal and much of Africa, and in 2023 the magazine ranked him number 69 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. N’Dour has been the subject of several acclaimed films, including Return to Gorée (2007) and Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love (2008). In 2006, he portrayed Olaudah Equiano in the film Amazing Grace. N’Dour was born in Dakar to a Serer father and a Toucouleur mother, though culturally he identifies as Wolof. He began performing at the age of twelve and later became a regular member of the Star Band, one of Dakar’s most popular groups during the 1970s.
