Sweet Smoke

Sweet Smoke was an American rock band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1968. Although the group originated in the United States, they became strongly associated with the European underground scene and are often described as part of the Krautrock movement. Their music was known for its energetic rhythms, extended improvisations, and intricate arrangements. The band cited influences ranging from Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix to Frank Zappa, John Coltrane, and The Beatles. After early performances in the United States and the Caribbean, Sweet Smoke relocated to Germany in 1969. They settled in a farmhouse commune in the village of Hüthum, near Emmerich and close to the Dutch border. The group became well known in the region not only for their dynamic live shows but also for their interest in Eastern philosophy and psychedelic culture, which shaped both their lifestyle and their music. When the band arrived in Germany, the lineup included: Andy Dershin – bass, Michael Fontana – tenor saxophone, alto recorder, vocals, percussion, Jay Dorfman – drums, percussion, Marvin Kaminowitz – lead guitar, vocals, Victor Sacco – guitar. Sacco left shortly after the move and was replaced by Steve Rosenstein on rhythm guitar and vocals. Between 1969 and 1974, Sweet Smoke performed extensively across Germany, the Netherlands, and France, building a dedicated following. The band dissolved in 1974, with some members remaining in Europe, others traveling to India, and most eventually returning to the United States.
