The Tragically Hip

The Tragically Hip, often referred to simply as the Hip, was a Canadian rock band formed in Kingston, Ontario, in 1984. The classic lineup consisted of vocalist Gord Downie, guitarists Paul Langlois and Rob Baker (known as Bobby Baker until 1994), bassist Gord Sinclair, and drummer Johnny Fay. Over a 33‑year career, the band released 13 studio albums, two live albums, two EPs, and more than 50 singles. Nine of their albums reached No. 1 on the Canadian charts. They received numerous Canadian music awards, including 17 Juno Awards. Between 1996 and 2016, The Tragically Hip were the best‑selling Canadian band in Canada and the fourth best‑selling Canadian artist overall. Following Downie’s diagnosis with terminal brain cancer in 2015, the band embarked on a Canadian tour in support of their thirteenth album, Man Machine Poem. The final concert of the tour — and ultimately their last performance — took place at the Rogers K‑Rock Centre in Kingston on 20 August 2016. The event was broadcast globally by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation across television, radio and online platforms. After Downie’s death on 17 October 2017, the band announced in July 2018 that they would no longer perform under the name The Tragically Hip. The surviving members have continued to pursue other musical projects and have begun releasing deluxe reissues of their albums, featuring previously unreleased archival material. They have also reunited for occasional special performances in collaboration with artists such as Feist and William Prince.
