Morris Day and The Time

The Time — later known as Morris Day and The Time and The Original 7ven — is an American funk‑rock band formed in Minneapolis in 1981. They played a major role in shaping the Minneapolis sound, a blend of funk, R&B, new wave, synth‑pop, and dance music. Fronted by Morris Day, the group became closely associated with Prince, and are often considered the most commercially successful act to emerge from his circle. Their hits include “Get It Up,” “The Bird,” “Cool,” “777‑9311,” “Jungle Love,” and “Jerk Out.” Former members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis left the band in 1983 and went on to become one of the most influential production teams in modern music. Morris Day and guitarist Jesse Johnson also pursued solo careers alongside their work with The Time. The Time was created under a clause in Prince’s contract with Warner Bros., which allowed him to recruit and produce other artists for the label. Inspired by the 1980 film The Idolmaker, Prince envisioned a pop‑funk group that could perform material in the style of his early albums while he explored different musical directions in his own career.
