Esperanza Spalding

Esperanza Emily Spalding (born October 18, 1984), often stylized as esperanza spalding, is an American bassist, vocalist, songwriter and composer. She is widely regarded as one of the most innovative contemporary figures in jazz and genre‑blending music. Her work has earned five Grammy Awards, a Boston Music Award, a Soul Train Music Award, and honorary doctorates from both the Berklee College of Music and the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Spalding was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She began performing professionally at a very young age, joining the Chamber Music Society of Oregon as a violinist at just five years old. Over time she expanded her musical abilities, teaching herself guitar and bass while also receiving formal training. Her talent earned her academic scholarships to Portland State University and later to the Berklee College of Music, where she continued her studies. Spalding released her debut album, Junjo, in 2006 on the Spanish label Ayva Musica. She subsequently signed with the American independent label Heads Up, which issued her self‑titled album in 2008. Her breakthrough came with her third studio album, Chamber Music Society (2010), which reached number 34 on the Billboard 200 and earned her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, making her the first jazz musician to win the category. Spalding’s fourth album, Radio Music Society (2012), brought further acclaim.
