Steve J. Morse (born July 28, 1954) is an American guitarist and songwriter. A seven‑time Grammy nominee, he is best known as the founder of the Dixie Dregs and as the longest‑serving guitarist for Deep Purple, having joined the band in 1994. Morse has also enjoyed a successful solo career and was a member of Kansas in the mid‑1980s. In 2011, he became a member of the supergroup Flying Colors. Steve Morse was born in Hamilton, Ohio. His family later moved to Tennessee and then to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he spent most of his childhood. Although he was familiar with piano and clarinet, Morse ultimately gravitated toward the guitar. He briefly played with his older brother Dave in a band called The Plague until the family relocated to Augusta, Georgia. In the late 1960s, he performed in a band called Three with Dave and junior high schoolmate William Gerald (Jerry) Wooten, who played keyboards. The group performed at a local psychedelic youth club, the Glass Onion, as well as at Legion Halls and church events. While attending the Academy of Richmond County, Morse met bassist Andy West, and together they formed Dixie Grit, joined by keyboardist Johnny Carr and guitarist/vocalist Frank Brittingham, with Dave Morse on drums. This short‑lived group played material by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Cream. Morse and West continued performing as a duet under the name Dixie Dregs until Morse was expelled from school in the 10th grade for refusing to cut his hair.
